ADHD IN CHILDREN -
So you have a child with ADHD?
Welcome to the club! Have you noticed the explosion of kids who have been
labeled with this relatively new phenomenon? Have you noticed the heated
debate about to use or not to use drugs? Have you noticed the grey areas that
exist in trying to identify if your child "fits" into this mold? Have you noticed
how upset you have become in trying to sort all this out?
I am not going to tell you that I understand why this has happened to you and
now millions of others. I would ask you to remember a time when in the 60's a
new generation of children were born who seemed to be born with a
completely new agenda than that of their parents. Even as very young adults
these kids stood out as having tendencies for transformational change.
Through the 60's, these kids literally changed the course of our society.
Naturally this great of a change did create a lot of chaos at times. However in
the end, these people championed a new way of life and living.
Do you not think it is very similar now, that a new group of people are being
born that all share the same tendencies? These kids do not have patience for
being placed in a box and forced to learn that which they do not have interest
in. Sure, many of us as I remember did not fit in with the school system and
being forced to learn things that were not in our desire to learn.
These new kids though, are not physically hard wired in the same way that we
were. It is virtually impossible to make them conform to things that are very
unnatural for them to do. There minds are quick, their bodies are quick.
Their patience is very thin, and whether you have noticed or not, they are
boarder line creative genius's.
But alas, these kids will not willingly conform to being placed in a one size
fits all box that the school system and society says they must fit. These kids
are not wired to fit this system as we have created and passed down to them.
So, society in unfortunate concensous decided these kids can be drugged into
compliance with the system we have created. We have in essence decided not
to change the system, but to drug and change the child. A chemical lobotomy
of sorts. There is certainly a strong and healthy debate about whether this is
something that we should be doing, and I hope the debate continues.
It doesn't take a rocket scientists to notice the world is changing, quickly. It
doesn't take a far reach of the mind to expect the world we as parents grew up
in, will be much different for our children. The truth is, we do not know what
truly lies ahead for our kids as they engage with the future world. But if I
were a betting man, I would lay my money on this new wave of kids being
wired in just the right way to handle what ever comes along. Mother nature
has surly done more spectacular and amazing things.
You, a parent of a child with one of these new labels, ADD, ADHD, have to
figure out how to change the system for your child. The child can not be
changed. The child is as they should be, and yes it is different than you. Put
yourself in your child's shoes. Think how disturbing it must be to receive
consistent validation they are not behaving or acting the way they are
supposed too. Imagine how they must feel when they notice other kids can be
still, can pay attention and yet this ability seems to escape them. Each day
becomes a reinforced reminder that they are different, that something is wrong
with them. What a burden this must be. Imagine this child decides to try as
hard as he can to sit still, pay attention and be like the other kids. Yet, his
body screams to him to move. His mind will not respond to intentional
submission because the creative forces that animate him are flooding his mind
with new stimulants second by second. And try as he may, over and over, he
can not conform to this system that was so familiar to you and I.
These kids need more than anything simple understanding. Understanding that
they are not ever going to be like you and I were, a robot of compliance to the
system. And if you give some thought to that idea, it should become very
clear how each of us were.
These kids need exercise, and a lot of it. These kids are just as capable of
learning as all other kids, but the teaching must me done in short, and
interesting lessons, broken up with activities that offer variety. Each of these
children will have unique interests that should be exploited to the fullest.
Fulfilling these interests will be giving them the building blocks they will need
as they grow older, and also offer much needed variety during the day.
